5TH URAL INDUSTRIAL BIENNALE OF CONTEMPORARY ART

AES+F. ALLEGORIA SACRA

Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center, Atrium and Art Gallery (3 Borisa Yeltsina St., Ekaterinburg)
September 12 – October 27, 2019

The project “Allegoria Sacra” takes its name from the painting of the same name by Italian Renaissance artist Giovanni Bellini that hangs at the Uffizi Gallery. As believed by many art historians, it depicts Purgatory, where the souls of the dead wait to learn of the decision about their fates. The purgatory of AES+F is an airport. Passengers accidentally meeting each other are the inhabitants of the world invented by the artists, which is a metaphor for contemporary civilization. This is a surrealistic mix of new and old images that migrated into the artwork from the old masters, glossy magazines, myths, Hollywood movies and videogames. The video, created out of more than seventy thousand photographs is projected onto a 72-meter screen in the atrium every day at 21:00. Digital paintings of allegories are presented in the third-floor gallery.
