As part of the Artist-in-Residence programme of the 5th Ural Industrial Biennial, an exhibition is opening in Tobolsk – «Krasil Makar. An artist’s story in his own words». The exhibition immerses viewers in the history of Ural-Siberian mural painting and shows how this traditional technique continues to exist today.
Artist Krasil Makar works in the technique of mural painting. The golden age of this painting trade fell on the XVII – XX centuries, but early in the last century the development of this painting tradition came to a halt. Using the visual language of this unique craft, Makar brings new life into the painting school and reveals the potential of the craft through methods that have been used in art since the avant-garde.
This summer, Krasil Makar worked in Tobolsk at the SIBUR plant as part of the Artist-in-Residence programme of the 5th Ural Industrial Biennial. The outcome of this residence is a short film, in which traditional painting elements acquire a three-dimensional shape and fill the space of city streets and plant buildings. The final video will be shown at the exhibition in Tobolsk.
OPENING HOURS for the exhibition: 17 October – 17 November / Tuesday-Sunday 12:00–20:00, Monday – closed.
