Immortality – the theme of the 5th Ural Industrial Biennial – becomes a reason to talk about comprehension of mortality and turn to historical and individual memory. Everyone cherishes their departed: the accumulated years of intimacy and friendship are dissolved in memories. Our project is a bridge between the dead and the living.
The audience will get to know personal stories of the elderly citizens of Ekaterinburg, construct independently the experience that is being lived through and look anew at the surrounding city and their own conception of time.
The performance summarises the work of ‘1000 Years Together’ laboratory. As you might recall, from August 1st to 4th 28 laboratory participants undertook training in in-depth interviewing and documentary theatre, and analysed the nuances of sociological research. On the last day of the laboratory, the participants obtained more than 20 tandem interviews in different parts of Ekaterinburg. They spoke with random strangers – on the streets, benches and in communal entrance halls. The age of speakers – from 50 to 93 years old.
These collected interviews became the starting point for creating a dramatic text. The production team decided to work in a new stage format and make ‘theatre without actors’. The leading roles are entrusted to the audience themselves faced with documentary stories.
