5TH URAL INDUSTRIAL BIENNALE OF CONTEMPORARY ART
The special project of 5th Ural Industrial Biennial After Us explores today’s reality and its substitutes: gadgets, neural networks, mass market products. The pieces featured at the exhibition draw attention to the interaction between humans and digital world, the boundaries of which are becoming less and less distinct day after day. Overproduction of goods and overflow of information on the Internet make artists turn to already existing objects. The objects taken out of everyday life turn into artefacts and precisely represent the reality here and now.
Bringing together the private and the public, Igor Samolet, an artist, creates an installation made of screenshots—an archive of today’s life within the eternally sprawling online here-and-now. The pt9 art-group enters into a long-standing discussion on the boundaries of human capabilities: do neural networks copy our cognitive mechanisms? Can a machine create something beautiful? Surge protectors in Lyudmila Kalinichenko’s piece emphasize and problematize the necessity of always keeping the appliances turned on in order to continue chatting in messengers and social networks. Yulia Vergazova shows malls as self-sustaining intergalactic spaceships where the might-have-been space conquerors indulge in obsessive consumption.
Communities on social networks, dialogues on Chatroulette, a flow of selfies—all of these influences our life and makes us leave our digital footprints in a potentially perpetual data system. The exhibition discusses immortality, a theme of the 5th Ural Industrial Biennial, and makes a portrait of our today, which will be finished long after us.
